Biological Systems Engineering

BioProducts & BioEnergy

The scientists in this area research new ways to convert biomass, biological material now mostly classified as waste, into useful products, fuel, and fuel additives.

In order to maximize the value of unused biomass, biological systems engineering researchers are incorporating innovative processing and conversion technologies. For example, they are currently developing anaerobic digestion technology for converting animal waste into methane and other useful chemicals.

In addition, researchers have successfully produced valuable chemicals, such as lactic acid, using cull fruits and vegetables.
