Biological Systems Engineering Research

Research Facilities Overview

The facilities available for advanced study and research at Biological Systems Engineering are quite extensive.

Offices:
The graduate student is generally assigned to a spacious office shared with another student. Each office is provided with direct connection to the internet and depending upon the project and funding, a computer with printer is also provided. Several of these offices and the laboratories associated with them are located in the new Food Science and Human Nutrition Building located less than five minutes walking distance.

Many students are given space directly in the laboratories they will spend the most time in.

Laboratories:

Water Quality and Analysis laboratory

One of several modern, well equipped research Laboratories

The Water Quality and Analysis Laboratory pictured above, is one of serveral in the Bioproducts and Bioprocessing emphasis area. Certified by the Washington Department of Ecology, this lab is located in Room 122C of LJ Smith Hall, and conducts analysis of twenty different water quality parameters
under the guidelines of the EPA Quality Control and Quality Assurance Program. The manager is Jonathan Lomber.

Campus Facilities:

Food Science Bldg. Research laboratories, Graduate Student Offices and the Pilot Plant

The Pilot Plant is a research food processing facility shared by both the Departments of Biological Systems Engineering and Food Science. It is managed by Frank Younce

Technical Services is another facility that provides over six different technical service centers including the capability of fabricating custom glassware.

Facilities Operations provides additional support to the researcher in terms of design and construction support.

Support Personnel:

Discerning researchers will know that permanent professional administrative and technical support is essential to the success of their research efforts. Biological Systems Engineering provides full administrative and technical support in addition to the technical and administrative support provided by the individual facultly researchers.
