Setting up Your Computer

Introduction:

The following steps will quickly and completely prepare you and your computer for the day to day activities of our department. Once you have your network ID, you can proceed with the following even if you are not yet on campus.

Note: New WSU purchased computers are setup by the  CAHNRS Computer Support Group so you will only need your Network ID. For all other computers, you can have the CAHNRS group set them up for you or do it yourself with the instructions on this page.

Network ID:

Everything begins with your NETWORK ID. Without it, you are not part of the WSU system. All permanent faculty, staff, and students are required to have a Network ID.

If you are visiting faculty, staff, or student and are only here for a few days or weeks, you can obtain a "Friends of WSU" ID that will give you limited access to WSU services. You can do this yourself or have a WSU employee do it for you.

Computer Information:

Along with your network ID, you will need to know the physical hardware addresses of your computer's network ports.

Register Your Computer:

You will need to register your computer. You cannot do this without your Network ID and the physical hardware addresses of your computer which you should now have.

If you have a computer with wireless capability, you will do this twice; once for the wired network port and once for the wireless network port.

Virtual Private Network (VPN):

Finally you will need to set up VPN. This is required for wireless and off campus access to the WSU network. Follow the PPTP Client setup instructions for your operating system.

Obtaining Software:

You will need to obtain and install the following software:

Microsoft Office with Outlook 2003 or newer (Entourage for the Mac)

Symantec anti-virus

Windows Defender

Adobe Reader

Adobe Flash Player

Setting up Office:

You will need to configure Microsoft Outlook for the Exchange Service. IT provides a step by step procedure for doing this. Once again, a thorough understanding of the WSU exchange service will make your day to day communication tasks less confusing and more effective..

You may have your own personal electronic mail program that you believe is superior to Microsoft Outlook. So be it. You may use whatever program you choose, but it will be your responsibility, and yours alone, to inteface and communicate effectively with the WSU community.

Beyond the Basics:

The BSysE Discounted Software Page provides information for obtaining software at greatly reduced pricing for WSU/BSysE students, faculty, and staff.

Problems:

If you have trouble with this procedure, please contact the CAHNRS Computer Support Group .
