The study will be conducted over a four-year period.
Year One
-
Complete kinetic mortality data for
initial pests , codling moths, navel orangeworms, Mexican fruit flies (objective
1).
-
Determine a range of operation parameters
for achieving relatively uniform treatment conditions in apples, cherries,
walnuts, and grapefruits (objective 2).
-
Collect one season of experimental
data for some of the representative commodities, including apple, cherries,
walnuts, and grapefruits (objective 3).
Year Two
-
Collect second season data as listed
for year one, and expand the pest mortality data and number of commodities
(Objectives 1-3). The insect mortality data will be collected for
additional pests including Indian meal moths and apple maggot, and quality
data will be collected for other commodities, potentially pear, almonds
and oranges
-
Develop treatment protocols to for
apples, cherries, walnuts, and grapefruits chosen for the initial tests
(Objective 4).
-
We anticipate that by the end of
2nd year, we will be able to develop at least one successful treatment
protocol. We will coordinate demonstrations of the treatments and the treated
products in conjunction with industry meetings. We will also present our
results at industrial meetings, and will have our website online to report
current status of research and consortium activities (Objective 6).
Year Three
-
Complete objectives 1-3 for other
commodities and pests.
-
Conduct confirmatory tests for treatment
protocols using large quantities of representative commodities (Objective
4).
-
Develop treatment protocols for pears,
almonds, and oranges (Objective 4).
-
Initiate field tests of confirmed
protocols for representative commodities. We will collaborate with several
companies in Washington, California and Texas for those tests. We anticipate
that the industry will provide needed labors, technical support, and infrastructure
for on-site large quantity testing (Objectives 5 and 6).
-
We anticipate that we will develop
two to three confirmed protocols by the end of the third year. We will
organize two workshops to educate and train the industry personnel, university
extension specialists, and other researchers about the new protocols. We
will present technical results at professional and industry meetings. We
will maintain an active website to update new developments (Objective 6).
Year four
-
Complete protocol development and
field-tests, conduct economic analysis to make recommendation for implementation
in the industry (Objectives 4-5).
-
We will focus on promoting the new
technologies, and organize workshops, and demonstration of commercial scale
treatments.. We will present technical results at professional and commodity
meetings. We will maintain an active website to update new developments
(Objective 6).
-
The participants will complete a
summary report to document scientific and technical information generated
from this project. The document will be published as a book by a
scientific press. We will also organize an international symposium
to disseminate our findings (Objective 6).
